Highworth May Day Market
On Saturday 4th May 2013 Highworth celebrated May Day with a Roman Themed market fair.
The high- street was closed off to traffic, and people browsed market stalls, many stalls had raffles competitions for people to have a chance of winning prizes whilst giving money to a good cause, there were bespoke craft stalls, a fabulous selection of food, homemade cakes and local produce all on sale.
The festivities began with the Mayor of Highworth opening the fair supported by Boudicca, the day began with a performance from Sundara Belly Dancers which had the crowd mesmerised by their stunning costumes and beautiful dance routines.
This was followed by Roman Fire juggling – an awesome performance, despite the high winds not being in his favour for the act!
Traditional Maypole dancing in the market square, was great to see young children getting involved and taking part.
The Punch and Judy show was a huge success, the world’s most famous puppets took to the stage, entertaining the children and delighting all the adults.
Morris Dancing was performed by the Ickneild Way Morris Men, which delighted the crowds.
There was Face Painting, Farm Animals, street entertainers and other Roman themed displays to keep everyone entertained.
Children were encouraged to get involved by taking part in the Fancy Dress competition.
Highworth Library was open with a Roman Exhibition including a display of Roman Artifacts
The day came to an end with an evening of entertainment, live music in the square with 3 great bands.
It was a great family day out, full of fun and variety, fabulous entertainment with a historical twist.
